The Black Women’s Health Imperative is deeply saddened by the passing of Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, a staunch defender of the Constitution and voice for those unable to advocate for themselves.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, Representative Cummings was a champion for eradicating injustices, advocating for reproductive health, supporting universal healthcare for all, and eliminating health disparities.
Cummings pushed for policy and legislative change to increase the inclusion of underrepresented populations in clinical trials, and supported the foundational principles of Roe v Wade and a woman’s right to choose, which in part, earned him a 100% score from NARAL on women’s health issues.
We extend our condolences to his wife and friend of Black Women’s Health Imperative, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Dr. Maya Rockeymore Cummings, and to the rest of the family.
