BWHI is the only national organization dedicated solely to solving the most urgent health issues facing Black women and girls. For over 40 years, we have advanced evidence-based programs, informed policy, and translated research to action, working alongside communities and decision-makers to deliver systemic change.

Position Summary

The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) is seeking an experienced, dynamic Senior Director of Marketing and Brand Strategy to elevate our marketing strategies and expand our impact. This strategic leader will support the EVP of Marketing and Communication in amplifying BWHI’s mission through powerful storytelling, innovative campaigns, and effective media engagement. In addition to planning and overseeing the development and implementation of marketing initiatives, this role will ensure smooth coordination across the marketing team and with our marketing vendors in executing campaigns aligned with our programs and mission.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Marketing & Planning

  • Support the development and lead the execution of integrated marketing strategies that elevate BWHI’s visibility, engage key audiences, and drive measurable impact.
  • Translate program, advocacy, and fundraising goals into actionable briefs and 360° campaign plans.
  • Ensure program-specific marketing is synergistic with brand marketing, aligned with organizational priorities, and properly resourced.
  • Create and maintain a strategic marketing calendar to coordinate campaigns, optimize timing, and ensure alignment across brand and program initiatives.
  • Develop program- and project-level marketing budgets to ensure funder goals are realized and spend is optimized.
  • Oversee campaign implementation in partnership with the EVP, ensuring brand consistency, cultural resonance, and alignment with BWHI’s mission.
  • Manage the overall marketing budget to maximize impact across brand and program initiatives.

Data-Driven Planning & Evaluation

  • Leverage analytics, audience insights, and media mix modeling to optimize targeting, resource allocation, and campaign effectiveness.
  • Establish and track KPIs to measure performance, triangulate results, and refine strategies in real time.
  • Provide regular reporting to senior leadership on marketing performance and impact.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and emerging platforms to ensure strategies remain innovative, competitive, and mission-aligned.

Public Relations & Media Engagement

  • Coordinate PR and media efforts with external partners to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Prepare talking points and briefing materials for media appearances and events.
  • Lead crisis communications planning and response in partnership with senior leadership.

Digital, Social & Storytelling Strategy

  • Oversee digital and social media strategy to drive reach, engagement, and audience growth.
  • Direct the creation of compelling content—including newsletters, fundraising materials, press releases, web content, and visual assets—that highlights BWHI’s mission and impact.
  • Ensure a cohesive narrative across all digital platforms that reflects BWHI’s values and advances its advocacy and program priorities.
  • Use audience insights and engagement data to refine strategies and continuously improve outreach.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner with program leaders to ensure marketing strategies balance program priorities with overarching brand objectives.
  • Collaborate across departments to align communications with organizational priorities.
  • Manage agency relationships, including contracts, performance reviews, and business updates.
  • Coordinate with consultants and external partners to expand capacity as needed.
  • Mentor and manage staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.

Required Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in marketing and brand strategy, including leadership roles within non-profit or mission-driven organizations.
  • Strong understanding of the health advocacy landscape.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to craft compelling narratives and talking points.
  • Strong project management abilities, with experience coordinating teams and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in digital platforms and social media management with a deep understanding of metrics, analytics, and data-driven decision-making.
  • 25% travel required.

Preferred Education & Experience 

  • A Master’s degree 
  • Proven experience leading large-scale marketing and brand strategy campaigns, including strategy development, execution, and performance measurement.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily computer-based work with extended periods of sitting.
  • Occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs.) for materials or event setup.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 25% of the time, including overnight trips.

Work Environment & Availability:

  • Location: Fully remote; must maintain a quiet, professional home office environment
  • Standard work hours are 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST, Monday through Friday, with availability for core hours between 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST.
  • Flexibility to work outside standard hours on occasion for urgent matters, events, or time-sensitive activities.

The estimated base compensation range for this role is $102,500 – $120,000. Actual base pay for a successful candidate will consider skills, experience and location.
