Overview 

For over 40 years, the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) has been one of the leading national organizations dedicated solely to improving the health and wellness of Black women physically, emotionally, and financially. We advance and promote Black women’s health through three focus areas: Wellness Programs, Policy and Advocacy, and Research Translation. We target the most pressing health issues that affect Black women and girls in the U.S. through investments in evidence-based strategies, programs, and advocacy outreach on health policies. 

Description of Position 

The Development Department is driven by three core tenets: 

  1. We are service-oriented.
  2. We are data-driven.
  3. We are bold for Black women.

To meet our ambitious goals for Black women, we are expanding our development team. Specifically, we are hiring a Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) to lead our institutional giving program and secure additional funding and corporate and foundation champions for Black women and girls. 

The Director will report to the Executive Vice President of Development (EVP) and be responsible for contributing to the overall CFR fundraising goal of $9 million annually. They will work closely with the EVP and members of the program team to identify, cultivate, and secure funding from corporations and foundations for BWHI’s work.

The Day-to-Day 

As the Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations, a typical day might include: 

  • Managing a portfolio of 75-100 CFR donors, including, but not limited to: introducing BWHI’s work to new prospects and learning about their philanthropic priorities to determine the best avenue for support; engaging with current donors to secure additional gifts; and updating donors on the impact of their giving. Most of this work can take place via virtual meetings.
  • Managing the Corporate Partners Program, a group of corporations that commit to 3-year support plans, in exchange for benefits. Regular cultivation, stewardship, and engagement of this community, and the creation of opportunities for them to deepen their connection to the organization will be required. Goals will include increasing members as well as increasing members’ contributions. 
  • Using various platforms to research and develop profiles on new corporate and foundation funding prospects. 
  • Encouraging corporate donors to use additional funding to set up matching gifts for their employees. 
  • Solicitation of both general revenue gifts and sponsorship of key events/projects throughout the year. 
  • Collaborating with the communications and event teams on the development of sponsorship collateral for BWHI events. 

Experience/Qualifications 

Required skills and qualifications: 

  • Has 5 -7 years of experience in fundraising for nonprofits
  • Possesses a bachelor’s degree
  • Can manage a high volume of work with efficiency
  • Is a strong project manager and “plans backwards” to meet deadline
  • Can juggle competing demands and prioritize without sacrificing quality
  • Asks for help when needed
  • Is a clear, persuasive, compassionate communicator, inspiring funders to invest in and partner with BWHI
  • Can learn and incorporate BWHI’s “voice”
  • Understands and applies best practices in fundraising with corporations, family and private foundations

Preferred skills and qualifications: 

  • Having demonstrated knowledge of and experience securing 6 and 7-figure gifts ● Experience using the Salesforce platform 

Salary and Benefits 

  • This position is remote, with no more than 10% travel required
  • Salary range: $90,000-105,000
