WHO WE ARE:

Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) is the nation’s oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the health and wellness of Black women and girls. Founded more than 42 years ago on the campus of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, BWHI was created to ensure Black women are centered in health solutions that impact their lives, families, and communities. Our mission is to solve the most critical health issues that Black women and girls face through innovative programs, transformative research, and life-saving policies.

Today, BWHI leads national and community-based initiatives addressing critical health issues, including chronic disease prevention and management, menopause education, menstrual equity, HIV prevention and treatment, and breast and cervical cancer awareness and survivorship. By centering Black women—who are often most affected by systemic barriers—BWHI helps create healthier, more equitable systems that benefit everyone.
