Joy D. Calloway, MBA, MHSA, is a transformational leader with more than 30 years of health care and nonprofit leadership experience. She is widely recognized for her ability to guide organizations through times of change, serving as a stabilizing force and setting them on a path toward long-term success.
Calloway was named President & CEO of the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) in 2025, bringing her vision and expertise to the only national nonprofit working to solve the most pressing health issues affecting Black women and girls. Prior to joining BWHI, she served as Executive Director of the National Medical Association (NMA). She has also served as Interim President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, where she led the organization through a period of significant financial, operational, and cultural challenges. In addition, she held the role of Interim Executive Director of the National Association of Health Services Executives, guiding the organization as it transitioned to a new governance model.
From 2013 to 2018, Calloway served as President & CEO of New Center Community Mental Health Services in Detroit, where she revived and repositioned the agency to ensure it
remained a vital resource for the community. Earlier in her career, she was Associate Vice President for Community and Rural Network Development for St. Joseph Mercy Oakland hospital, Executive Director of Metro Healthcare Services, Inc., and founding CEO of Oakland Primary Health Services, the first federally qualified health center in Oakland County serving low-income and medically underserved populations.
A sought-after consultant and speaker, Calloway has shared her expertise with audiences around the world on issues including mental health, emotional intelligence, nonprofit governance, and operational strategy. She earned degrees from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor in Organizational Psychology (BA), Health Services Management and Policy (MHSA), and Human Resources (MBA).
Her leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the Michigan Chronicle’s Women of Excellence and the American Businesswomen’s Association “Boss of the Year” Award. She is also a 2024 graduate of the Leadership Greater Washington Signature Program. Over the years, she has served on the boards of national and local nonprofit organizations addressing issues ranging from youth development and community programs to gun violence prevention and support for girls experiencing homelessness.
Calloway is most proud of being mother to her daughter, Vashti, a special education teacher in Newport News, VA. She is an avid sports fan and also makes time to enjoy travel, live music, theater, and reading.
