Overview  The Black Women's Health Imperative (BWHI) is seeking an experienced, dynamic Senior Director of Marketing and Communications to elevate our marketing strategies and expand our impact. This strategic leader will support the EVP of Marketing and Communications in amplifying BWHI’s mission through powerful storytelling, innovative campaigns, and effective media engagement. In addition to overseeing the development and implementation of marketing initiatives, this role will ensure smooth coordination with external PR teams and guide our communications team in executing campaigns aligned with our mission. Key Responsibilities: Strategic Marketing & Communications
  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies to elevate BWHI’s brand visibility, enhance engagement with key audiences, and support organizational growth.
  • Lead message development and branding efforts across multiple platforms, aligning with BWHI’s mission and core programs, including those targeting reproductive health, chronic disease prevention, and advocacy.
  • Oversee campaign implementation and collaborate closely with the EVP to ensure brand consistency, clarity, and cultural resonance across all communications channels.
Public Relations and Media Engagement
  • Coordinate PR and media efforts by liaising with external PR teams, ensuring seamless alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Provide talking points and briefing materials for media appearances and engagements, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Oversee crisis communications planning and response in collaboration with senior leadership, managing communications for critical and high-profile situations.
Digital and Social Media Strategy
  • Evaluate and enhance BWHI’s social media strategy in partnership with the Social Media Manager, identifying new ways to drive engagement and reach new audiences.
  • Oversee content strategy across digital channels, including website updates, email newsletters, and social media, ensuring a cohesive, compelling narrative that reflects BWHI’s values.
  • Analyze audience insights and digital engagement data to inform strategic direction and continuously improve our digital outreach.
Content Development and Brand Storytelling
  • Direct the creation of impactful content including newsletters, fundraising materials, press releases, and website content to support BWHI’s initiatives.
  • Foster storytelling initiatives that highlight BWHI’s accomplishments, campaigns, and advocacy work, ensuring consistency with brand messaging and audience interests.
  • Supervise the development of visual assets by coordinating with the creative team and external vendors, ensuring all materials align with BWHI’s brand standards.
Collaboration and Team Leadership
  • Work collaboratively across BWHI teams—to support cross-departmental goals and ensure communications reflect organizational priorities.
  • Mentor and manage junior communications staff, providing clear direction and fostering an environment of growth, innovation, and accountability.
  • Coordinate with external consultants to supplement in-house resources and expand capacity as needed.
Metrics and Evaluation
  • Establish benchmarks and KPIs for evaluating the effectiveness of communications strategies and campaigns, reporting regularly on progress to senior leadership.
  • Stay informed of industry trends and best practices, continuously evolving BWHI’s marketing and communications strategies to maintain a competitive edge.
Required Education & Experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in marketing and communications, including leadership roles within non-profit or mission-driven organizations.
  • Proven expertise in media relations and public relations strategy, with a strong understanding of the health advocacy landscape.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to craft compelling narratives and talking points.
  • Strong project management abilities, with experience coordinating teams and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in digital platforms and social media management with a deep understanding of metrics, analytics, and data-driven decision-making.
  • 10% travel required.
Preferred Education & Experience 
  • A Master’s degree 
  • Proven experience leading large-scale marketing and communications campaigns, including strategy development, execution, and performance measurement.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization
A reasonable estimate of the base compensation range for this role is $102,500 – $120,000 annually depending on experience. The actual salary for the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, geographic location, training, licensure and certification, and other factors. We target the most pressing health issues that affect Black women and girls in the U.S. through investments in evidence-based strategies, programs, and advocacy outreach on health policies. Description of Position  The Program Manage, Outreach and Engagement (OEM) will report to the Senior Director (SD) who is responsible for providing leadership of the organization’s reproductive justice initiatives including the My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) and Positive Period (PP) programs and will be a member of the Policy Advocacy and Science (PAS) department. The OEM supports the SD in working with other BWHI policy staff and affiliates to organize and monitor and implement key activities of the Reproductive Justice program at BWHI. This is a manager role, with responsibilities that include engagement and managing multiple partner collaborations, budgeting and tracking of expenses, and requires experienced clear communication skills with co-workers and external colleagues. While the Program Manager (OEM) primary responsibilities are outlined below, like all BWHI staff, the OEM contributes support to the overall vision and mission of the organization to address the health equity needs of Black women and girls. This role will directly support the Senior Director for RJ Initiatives by serving as the initial point of contact for certain components of the MSK and PP program and policy activities. The Day-to-Day 
  • Serves as the main point of contact and manager to the Senior Director in daily duties related to program management, evaluation, and quality assurance for the RJ portfolio
  • Manages RJ program duties, with direction from the Senior Director: budgeting and spreadsheet tracking, spending and receipts tracking for program activities
  • With direction from the SD, supports preparing and operating meetings agendas, program reports, presentations, and other materials
  • Maintains project management dashboard and Google Drive
  • Participates fully as a member of the Policy Advocacy and Science department
  • Conducts outreach calls and emails to identify the appropriate contact points for college/university, student organizations, student leaders, etc.
  • Serves as a point of contact for outreach activities for MSK and Positive Period initiatives; Maintains and updates outreach list of college/university (HBCUs and PWIs) contact information
  • Supports developing and maintaining evaluations, surveys, and additional metrics for reporting
  • Initiates and manages elements of in-person event planning including site selection, invite/registration management, onsite management, organizing catering, and subsequent follow-up
  • Assists with the administrative design, planning, implementation, and coordination of virtual events
  • Serves as a point of contact and manages the internal collaboration between the RJ and MarComm teams to support social media (Instagram, Twitter) including engagement, content development, community management, and reporting for the program
  • Works closely with MSK chapters in efforts that strengthen membership growth and engagement
  • Provides support to other BWHI policy advocacy and science programs and initiatives as needed
Required Education and Experience 
  • A High School diploma or GED.

  • Supports the research, development and implementation of Learning Management platforms.
  • Research instructional methods and educational technology trends to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts to define learning objectives and develop training content.
  • Evaluates training sessions and assesses the effectiveness of training programs using established metrics.
  • Supervises and trains facilitators for RJ curricula and maintain partnerships with implementing partners.

This role is the lead manager of BWHI policy strategies and activities and supports the EVP of PAS in leading the agency priorities for key policy positions which align to our program areas (Maternal Health, Reproductive Justice, HIV, Chronic Disease, Fair Work and Rare Disease). This position maintains BWHI policy presence on “The Hill”, with legislative partners, health aides of members of Congress, and policy advocacy health organizations, to ensure that BWHI positions are communicated and shared. This position also supports translation of policy into action, working as part of the PAS team to integrate policy recommendation across BWHI programs. Potential projects for which responsibility may be assigned at time of hire may include: participation in advocacy group meetings with partners as a representative of BWHI, developing advocacy letters, maintaining the letter signing spreadsheet and database, This role majorly contributes to the revisions of BWHI policy strategy, writing of policy briefs, and establishment of a routine multi-sectoral policy communication strategy which reflect BWHI positions with our partners and across the organization.  Please note that this role is remote and must be based in the Washington DC/DMV area.  The Day-to-Day 
  • In collaboration and partnership with the EVP, PAS, leads the development and updating of BWHI policy frameworks in alignment and collaboration with program department leads, and external partners input.
  • Works in collaboration with the Marketing and Communications team to prepare routine statements, opEds, and communication on pressing and present policy issues to advance BWHI’s voice and responses. 
  • Advances and communicates BWHI priorities with current federal and state agencies, policy officials.
  • In collaboration with the EVP, PAS and guided by agency priorities, establish working relationships with policy counterparts at other health or public policy executive agencies; foundations, think tanks, and non-governmental organizations. 
  • Builds strong, lasting partnerships with house and senate staff and committees and partner organizations to ensure the lived experiences of Black women are included in federal and state policies.
  • Facilitates the identification of policy and strategic planning issues and formulation of analysis, reports, and policy recommendations for the PAS team, the President, and agency leaders.
  • Develops and maintains good relationships with funders, clients and colleagues. 
  • Supports preparing and/or monitors project budgets with the EVP for Finance and EVP for PAS.

  • Excellent writing skills and use of policy related terminology oriented towards advocacy letters, legislation, white papers and briefs
  • Motivational speaking experience. 
  • Familiar project management software and database tracking software (Salesforce, Asana, Monday.com, etc)
  • This position is remote, but the candidate should reside/be local to the Washington, DC/DMV area.

  • Serve as the lead research team member managing the Hologic/UAB/Morehouse cervical and breast cancer research study, managing collaborative communications, protocol monitoring, and establishing implementation of data collection activities 
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with funders, clients and colleagues Help design and refine department research protocols (e.g., publication processes)

  • Technical experience in the use of either qualitative or quantitative data analysis software systems, such as: redCap, Dedoose, Atlas. Ti, STATA, SAS, or R. 
  • Research presentation experience (conference level) to increase BWHI research "footprint." 
  • Experience in budget management and compliance. 
  • Prepares thorough written materials for research activities (e.g., correspondence, research protocols) that are clear and well written.
  • Summarizes data excellently from research projects appropriately in project reports/articles. 
  • Can effectively mentor (and potentially supervise) junior staff and entry-level research team members, including data collection and analysts, as hired in project and professional pursuits.

Description of Position The Development Department is driven by three core tenets:
  1. We are service-oriented.

To meet our ambitious goals for Black women, we are expanding our development team. Specifically, we are hiring a Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) to lead our institutional giving program and secure additional funding and corporate and foundation champions for Black women and girls.  The Director will report to the Executive Vice President of Development (EVP) and be responsible for contributing to the overall CFR fundraising goal of $9 million annually.  They will work closely with the EVP and members of the program team to identify, cultivate, and secure funding from corporations and foundations for BWHI’s work.  The Day-to-Day As the Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations, a typical day might include:  
  • Managing a portfolio of 75-100 CFR donors, including, but not limited to: introducing BWHI’s work to new prospects and learning about their philanthropic priorities to determine the best avenue for support; engaging with current donors to secure additional gifts; and updating donors on the impact of their giving. Most of this work can take place via virtual meetings.  
 
  • Managing the Corporate Partners Program, a group of corporations that commit to 3-year support plans, in exchange for benefits. Regular cultivation, stewardship, and engagement of this community, and the creation of opportunities for them to deepen their connection to the organization will be required. Goals will include increasing members as well as increasing members’ contributions. 
  • Using various platforms to research and develop profiles on new corporate and foundation funding prospects.
  • Encouraging corporate donors to use additional funding to set up matching gifts for their employees.
  • Solicitation of both general revenue gifts and sponsorship of key events/projects throughout the year. 
  • Collaborating with the communications and event teams on the development of sponsorship collateral for BWHI events. 
Required Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in fundraising for nonprofits.
  • Can manage a high volume of work with efficiency.
  • Is a strong project manager and “plans backwards” to meet deadlines.
  • Can juggle competing demands and prioritize without sacrificing quality
  • Asks for help when needed.
  • Is a clear, persuasive, compassionate communicator, inspiring funders to invest in and partner with BWHI.
  • Can learn and incorporate BWHI’s “voice” 
  • Understands and applies best practices in fundraising with corporations, family and private foundations.
  • No more than 10% travel
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Having demonstrated knowledge of and experience securing 6 and 7-figure gifts
  • Experience using the Salesforce platform 
A reasonable estimate of the base compensation range for this role is $92,500 – $105,000 annually depending on experience. The actual salary for the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, geographic location, training, licensure and certification, and other factors.
