Housing Cuts and the Ripple Effect on Black Women and Girls
The proposed cuts to Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding are real, and they’re going to hit Black women and girls the hardest. For generations, affordable housing has been a lifeline, especially for low-income communities. HUD plays a crucial role in supporting housing programs that help our families get access to safe, stable homes. But with these funding cuts on the horizon, the future is looking uncertain.
Here’s what’s at stake:
- Affordable Housing Loss: These cuts threaten programs that provide rental assistance, low-income housing, and homeless prevention services—programs that many Black women and girls depend on.
- Increased Displacement: As funding dries up, gentrification will intensify, pushing Black families out of neighborhoods that have been home for decades. Women, especially single mothers, will feel the strain of trying to find affordable places to live.
- Rising Homelessness: Black women are disproportionately affected by homelessness, and these cuts will only make it harder for those in need to get the support they deserve. Without proper resources, the cycle of homelessness will continue to spiral.
- Worsening Economic Insecurity: Stable housing is a foundation for economic stability. When housing is threatened, so is the ability for Black women and girls to thrive in work, school, and their communities.
- Threats to Generational Wealth: Homeownership is one of the most powerful tools for building generational wealth, yet these cuts could make it even harder for Black families to own homes or pass down assets. Without affordable housing opportunities, the racial wealth gap will only widen, making it more difficult for future generations to gain financial stability.
Our homes, our communities, and our economic power are on the line. Now is the time to fight for the housing and economic security our communities deserve.
