About BWHI

The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) is the only national organization solely focused on promoting the physical, emotional and financial health and wellness of the nation’s 21 million Black women and girls.  For the almost four decades, BWHI has served as the leading voice for health and wellness for Black women and girls across the country. Today, we continue in our mission to advance health equity and social justice for Black women across the lifespan, eliminate racial and gender-based health inequities and deepen Black women’s resolve in becoming informed decision makers to achieve optimum health and wellness. 

Over the past 7 years, BWHI has invested more than $15M in communities across the US, touched over 20,000 Black women and families with chronic disease prevention programs, created an international diabetes prevention training unit and, established a $20M rare disease diversity council. We have led many national campaigns featuring Mary J Blige, Ciara, NFL Players and the WNBA, among others, to build awareness of health inequities and empower Black women to make the best health decisions for themselves and their families.

No national organization has been as impactful on Black women’s health or their lived experiences narrative as BWHI.

The Role

The Chief Communications Officer (CCO) reports to the President and CEO and works closely with members of the executive staff to realize the brand identity and impact goals of the BWHI Strategic Plan.  The CCO will resource, create and guide the strategy for all printed, electronic and verbal communications. This will include all digital, and collateral messaging to consistently articulate the mission and value proposition of BWHI and ensure that BWHI is perceived as the leading national organization committed to the health and wellness of Black women and girls.

The CCO works closely with the executive team (programs, strategy, operations, policy and development) as the communications partner strategic initiatives, campaigns, programs and funding outreach that comprise our 2021-2023 strategic plan. This position is the primary concept source for innovative thinking and content. The person in this position will reinforce existing placement relationships and create innovative means to share the messaging with a diverse media network and constituent base.

The successful candidate will have 5-7 years’ experience aligning resource requirements with strategic objectives, developing business cases for support, cultivating business and partnership opportunities and collaborating with development leaders to secure funding from individuals, corporations and foundations. The results of these efforts will produce expanded brand recognition, increased unrestricted revenue and mission accomplishment.

The Day to Day

Actively partners with the President and CEO, senior staff and stakeholders to tell the BWHI story of impact in a way that enhances the brand and garners national recognition

Manages multiple communications projects from national campaigns to event promotions simultaneously 

Supervises a staff of 3 full time personnel and 7-10 external contractors and consultants

Manages multiple communications budgets in accordance with funder requirements

Leads and develops the communications team to ensure they grow and make a significant impact telling the BWHI story

Manages program and initiative specific communications personnel so all of their work is in alignment with BWHI brand standards and requirements

Works closely with the CDO to conceptualize and develop campaigns and initiatives for private and corporate foundations

Conceives and develops creative and innovative national and regional campaigns and materials to build awareness of BWHI, highlight our core mission objectives and, most importantly, empower women to understand their health and make the best decisions possible

Understands BWHI programs and mission and work with executive leadership to develop innovative approaches to creating broad recognition and impact for their programs and initiatives. 

Leads brand and issue awareness through the development and leveraging of creative and timely social media, digital properties, media relations and obtaining earned media

Partners and collaborates with the Chief Development Officer to secure significant funding from corporate and private foundations, major gift supporters and individual and workplace donors

Develops and evaluates brand standards, policies and communications metrics across all BWHI  programs and initiatives

Ensures all of BWHI messages, imagery and stakeholder facing materials align with core brand standards


Has simultaneously managed multiple projects with multiple stakeholders 

Has 7-10 years as a creative having led projects in excess of $3M in budget and national in scope

Has had P&L responsibility and understands how to develop and manage to a budget; forecasting and resource alignment

Has 5-7 years experience managing departments with more than 10 staff including social media, web/digital media, PR and media relations

Is known and respected by leading media outlets, marketing agencies and key influencers

Has conceptualized and developed brand identities and elevated brands for companies and organizations to successfully meet mission requirements

Has used social media to build awareness and brand recognition for mission driven organizations

Has conceived of, developed and implemented major awareness and issue-driven campaigns

Has excellent time management skills and can prioritize work to ensure goals are met

Is self-aware and understands how to fairly reach consensus on issues with multiple perspectives 

Has excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including conflict resolution skills

Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
