Position Title: Senior Director of Marketing and Communications
Reports To: Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications

Overview

The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) is seeking an experienced, dynamic Senior Director of Marketing and Communications to elevate our marketing strategies and expand our impact. This strategic leader will support the EVP of Marketing and Communications in amplifying BWHI’s mission through powerful storytelling, innovative campaigns, and effective media engagement. In addition to overseeing the development and implementation of marketing initiatives, this role will ensure smooth coordination with external PR teams and guide our communications team in executing campaigns aligned with our mission.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Marketing & Communications

  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies to elevate BWHI’s brand visibility, enhance engagement with key audiences, and support organizational growth.
  • Lead message development and branding efforts across multiple platforms, aligning with BWHI’s mission and core programs, including those targeting reproductive health, chronic disease prevention, and advocacy.
  • Oversee campaign implementation and collaborate closely with the EVP to ensure brand consistency, clarity, and cultural resonance across all communications channels.

Public Relations and Media Engagement

  • Coordinate PR and media efforts by liaising with external PR teams, ensuring seamless alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Provide talking points and briefing materials for media appearances and engagements, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Oversee crisis communications planning and response in collaboration with senior leadership, managing communications for critical and high-profile situations.

Digital and Social Media Strategy

  • Evaluate and enhance BWHI’s social media strategy in partnership with the Social Media Manager, identifying new ways to drive engagement and reach new audiences.
  • Oversee content strategy across digital channels, including website updates, email newsletters, and social media, ensuring a cohesive, compelling narrative that reflects BWHI’s values.
  • Analyze audience insights and digital engagement data to inform strategic direction and continuously improve our digital outreach.

Content Development and Brand Storytelling

  • Direct the creation of impactful content including newsletters, fundraising materials, press releases, and website content to support BWHI’s initiatives.
  • Foster storytelling initiatives that highlight BWHI’s accomplishments, campaigns, and advocacy work, ensuring consistency with brand messaging and audience interests.
  • Supervise the development of visual assets by coordinating with the creative team and external vendors, ensuring all materials align with BWHI’s brand standards.

Collaboration and Team Leadership

  • Work collaboratively across BWHI teams—to support cross-departmental goals and ensure communications reflect organizational priorities.
  • Mentor and manage junior communications staff, providing clear direction and fostering an environment of growth, innovation, and accountability.
  • Coordinate with external consultants to supplement in-house resources and expand capacity as needed.

Metrics and Evaluation

  • Establish benchmarks and KPIs for evaluating the effectiveness of communications strategies and campaigns, reporting regularly on progress to senior leadership.
  • Stay informed of industry trends and best practices, continuously evolving BWHI’s marketing and communications strategies to maintain a competitive edge.

Required Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in marketing and communications, including leadership roles within non-profit or mission-driven organizations.
  • Proven expertise in media relations and public relations strategy, with a strong understanding of the health advocacy landscape.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to craft compelling narratives and talking points.
  • Strong project management abilities, with experience coordinating teams and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in digital platforms and social media management with a deep understanding of metrics, analytics, and data-driven decision-making.
  • 10% travel required.

Preferred Education & Experience 

  • A Master’s degree 
  • Proven experience leading large-scale marketing and communications campaigns, including strategy development, execution, and performance measurement.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization

A reasonable estimate of the base compensation range for this role is $102,500 – $120,000 annually depending on experience. The actual salary for the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, geographic location, training, licensure and certification, and other factors.
